What to Expect

What to Expect at Your First Classical Hematology Appointment

The Classical Hematology team at Cincinnati Children’s offers the latest care for infants, children, and young adults with pediatric blood disorders. We are here to help answer your questions about your child’s first appointment with us.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for your child’s first Classical Hematology visit.

Making an Appointment with Classical Hematology

If your child needs an outpatient clinic appointment with the Classical Hematology team, their pediatrician or another provider will give you a referral. We also accept self-referrals from families.

After your child’s provider submits a referral, our Classical Hematology scheduler will call you to schedule an appointment. You can also contact us directly to schedule an appointment.

Once you make your appointment, our team will contact your child’s doctor for any medical records and test results. Our nurse care manager and hematologists will review your child’s health history before your visit.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

During your child’s first appointment, our multidisciplinary team will review a diagnostic and treatment plan and provide extensive education about your child’s condition and how to manage it. First appointments in our clinic last between one to one and a half hours but may vary depending on your child’s needs.

Arriving at Your Appointment

Please arrive at the CBDI outpatient clinic on B5 at Burnet Campus 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Allow an additional 10 minutes for parking and walking to our clinic. If you’re running late, please contact us.

You won’t need to bring anything with you to your first appointment. If you have test results from your pediatrician, please bring them with you.

During Your Appointment

At this visit, your child will see a combination of clinic nurses, hematology specialists, hematology fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and a nurse care manager. You may also meet with child life and social work staff who can comfort your child and teach them coping strategies for managing their condition.

During this appointment, our care team will conduct:

  • A health history, including family history
  • A physical exam to evaluate blood disorders
  • Lab tests, including bloodwork

Depending on your child’s health history, our clinical research coordinator may meet with you about opportunities to participate in research studies and clinical trials. Being part of a research study isn’t required—the choice to join a study is up to you and your child.

At the end of your appointment, our care team will give you a written after-visit summary that explains what happened during your visit and any instructions about your child’s care.

After Your Appointment

Our team will contact you after your child’s visit to review test results and the treatment plan either by phone or via MyChart. We will also send a summary of your visit to your child’s pediatrician or the doctor who referred you. Our nurse care manager or scheduler will contact you after your appointment if we need to schedule any follow-up care. Your care manager and medical team can also answer any ongoing questions about your child’s condition or treatment plan.

Feel free to contact us between appointments with any questions or concerns. We are available to answer questions about your child’s care and to provide prescription refill orders. You can use MyChart for prescription refills and non-medical questions as well.
