Classical Hematology

Our Classical Hematology program is part of the Division of Hematology within the top-ranked Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children’s. We offer expert care for children, adolescents and young adults with the full range of pediatric hematology conditions. These include iron deficiency anemia, anemia of inflammation, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. We also treat conditions like hereditary and acquired hemolytic anemias such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hereditary sphrocytosis, and congenital dyserythropoietic anemia, as well as other autoimmune cytopenias like immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and Evans syndrome.

  • Advanced screening and diagnostic testing: We offer family testing and genetic counseling for inherited hematology conditions like hereditary hemolytic anemias, thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis, as well as advanced diagnostic testing for rare red blood cell, hemoglobin, platelet and immune disorders.

We coordinate care across many disciplines, including pulmonology, gastroenterology, oncology and others.   • Leading treatments for rare conditions. Our team of experts is skilled in caring for patients with rare conditions. This includes iron overload, congenital dyserythropoietic anemia, refractory autoimmune cytopenias and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). We also care for patients who have not responded to other treatments with advanced options. Your family has access to on-site diagnostic support, a state-of-the-art infusion center and bloodless options for patients who cannot have blood transfusions.
  • Research brought to your child’s bedside. From studies on hemolytic anemia and ITP to groundbreaking clinical trials, eligible patients can participate in a variety of research studies. This research advances our understanding of rare hematology conditions. We also have a well-established patient registry for rare hemolytic anemias, including congenital dyserythropoietic anemia, to help improve treatment options for patients with these conditions.
