Advanced Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders Fellowship

Training the Next Generation of Highly Skilled Neurogastroenterologists

The Advanced Fellowship in Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders at Cincinnati Children’s is a highly specialized, one-to-three-year program for candidates who have completed a three-year general gastroenterology fellowship and are looking for refined training in this subspecialty.

Our specialized program is one of only a handful in the country and since our Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders Center is a national and international referral destination, our fellows participate in the most complex, multidisciplinary cases from around the globe.

As a highly selective program, only one fellow is accepted each year. Our teaching faculty and mentors are dedicated to guiding the next generation of neurogastroenterologists. We’re proud to say many of our graduates have gone on to start similar programs in other hospitals around the world.

Program Highlights

  • Focus on diversity and volume of procedures performed by fellows
  • Consistent one-on-one mentorship
  • Comprehensive hands-on training and exceptional research opportunities
  • Gain knowledge and skills to address the full spectrum of motility issues in infants, children and adolescents.

Why Choose Cincinnati Children’s

Cincinnati Children’s is consistently ranked in the top tier of children’s hospitals in the country. Our fellows have the unique experience of training at a hospital that serves both the local community and a broader national and international population of patients.

Nationally Ranked for Care

Known for our personalized, innovative approach to care, our Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition division is ranked first in the nation for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery by U.S. News & World Report. We deliver first-rate, world-class care to patients and families from around the globe.

Highly Specialized Experts in Motility Disorders

The Cincinnati Children’s Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders Center is recognized as a Center of Excellence for IB-Stim, a revolutionary technique used to treat chronic abdominal pain in children and adolescents. Our multidisciplinary team of experts is experienced in diagnosing a wide range of motility disorders and skilled in the most advanced treatment therapies. As one of only a handful of advanced fellowship programs in pediatric neurogastroenterology and motility disorders in the country, we’re training the next generation of highly skilled neurogastroenterologists.

Highly Specialized Experts in Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI)

Helping our most vulnerable neighbors is paramount to our mission. The Health Equity Network for DGBI, a program funded by Cincinnati Children’s, provides opportunities to resolve disparities in underserved populations and involve community engagement and partnership with primary care. The National Institutes of Health-funded DGBI program also allows opportunities for fellows to be involved in cutting-edge research within the program.

Hands-On Experience with Advanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures

We believe knowledge is power and hands-on training is essential for the next generation of neurogastroenterologists. Our advanced fellowship program was one of the first to train fellows in IB-Stim, and we’re continuing that trend with other trailblazing modalities such as gastric electrical stimulation and sacral nerve stimulation. We teach a multidisciplinary approach to managing disorders of the gut-brain interaction through the DGBI clinic and incorporate 1:1 rotations with the highly specialized clinical DGBI psychologist to better understand the unique biopsychosocial care model that integrates standard-of-care treatments with nonpharmacologic behavioral, dietary and integrative therapies to provide the most comprehensive treatment for children with DGBI.

Dedicated One-on-One Support and Mentorship

In addition to the superior volume and complexity of cases experienced by our fellows, what sets our advanced fellowship apart is the unmatched level of diverse mentorship we provide. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending pediatric neurogastroenterologist in all areas of patient care, and fellow research projects are guided by our teaching faculty. We aim to give fellows the knowledge and experience needed to build an expanded pediatric neurogastroenterology and motility disorders program in other medical centers.
