Intensive Program for Physician Assistants Aiming to Subspecialize in Neonatology
The Neonatal Physician Assistant Transition to Practice Program at Cincinnati Children’s is a 12-month intensive program for Physician Assistants (PAs) aiming to subspecialize in neonatology. This position is hired and credentialed, with the goal of long-term employment at Cincinnati Children's.
The program prepares PAs for a career in neonatology. The program includes:
- Mentorship
- Didactic teaching
- Simulation
- Skills training
- Clinical experience at Level I-IV units
Participants will receive a certificate of completion after meeting all requirements and expectations of the program. Their initial placement after completion of the program will be at Cincinnati Children’s level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with the potential to rotate to a Level III NICU after several years based on standard APP seniority guidelines.
Program Objective
At the completion of the program, the PA will be able to provide comprehensive high-quality care for all types of patients in the NICU.
Curriculum
Didactic Education

Clinical training
PAs in the program will train in various settings, including:
- Delivery Rooms
- Newborn Nursery
- Level II Special Care Nursery
- Level III NICU
- Level IV NICU
PAs could have rotations with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Team, Pulmonary Hypertension Team, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Surgery.
Additional clinical sites could include the NICU Follow-Up Clinic, Fetal Care Center, Cardiac Care Unit or Transitional Care Center.

Requirements to Apply:
- The applicant must be a graduate from an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program
- The applicant must have passed or be eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certification exam (PANCE)

- Three letters of recommendation (one from PA Program faculty)
- Must be PANCE certified and licensed in the state of Ohio prior to the start of the program
- One-page typewritten personal statement describing why you want to complete this program
