Sophisticated Diagnostics
Prior to the initial appointment, our staff will attempt to obtain medical information that is relevant to the diagnosis and management of you or your child's vascular anomaly. The first step for our patients is to undergo a comprehensive evaluation by the HVMC team, which may occur over several days, particularly if the patient needs to see several specialists or have numerous tests.
Some vascular anomalies like infantile hemangiomas may be diagnosed by medical history and physical examination alone. The more complex vascular tumors and malformations may also require blood tests, tissue biopsy, genetic testing and/or sophisticated imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scan, ultrasonography and angiogram, in order to confirm the diagnosis. The Department of Radiology at Cincinnati Children's has developed a unique MRI protocol to evaluate vascular tumors and malformations.
Comprehensive Treatment Plan
Following the initial evaluation, the medical team will develop a comprehensive treatment plan. This plan will vary depending on the type of vascular tumor or malformation and its location, current symptoms and potential future complications. Treatment options may include close monitoring, compression garments, medications, surgery, laser therapy, sclerotherapy, embolization or a combination of therapies. After consultation at our center, patients and families have the option to continue to receive care at Cincinnati Children’s, or return home to the care of their referring physician with our individualized management recommendations.
