Our Research Programs

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine has research programs that span basic, translational, and clinical science. Our goals are to build upon and expand basic-science research by capitalizing on leading-edge translational clinical research and to lead the field in education and training, while maintaining our strong culture of discovery, innovation, compassion, and clinical care.

Our research falls into five broad categories:

Cellular and Molecular Research

Our research tackles the difficult problems and possible solutions of lifelong lung disease, with particular relevance to cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and circadian rhythms.

We have pioneered the use of hyperpolarized Xenon Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Xe MRI) and have performed important dynamic-airway computational fluid dynamics calculations in pediatrics.

Our investigators are conducting over 30 clinical trials, covering asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea, sJIA and other lung diseases.

Sleep, Airway and Circadian Rhythms

We focus on cutting edge airway and sleep research to decipher patterns of airflow in the large airway which becomes very complex in conditions like cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea, Down syndrome and craniofacial malformations.
