Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery Research

Researchers in the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery combine basic, clinical and translational research to understand a variety of pediatric conditions that require surgical intervention. The team develops novel treatments and devices to improve outcomes for children before and after birth.

Our faculty, fellows and research assistants work within our different subspecialty programs that draw patients from around the world.

The extensive clinical collaborations within the division provide for true bench-to-bedside research programs. This work drives and is driven by the clinical experience.

Our Research

Our research teams study:

• Fetal therapy, including congenital malformations, fetal surgery, functional aspects of the placenta and in-utero treatments
• Intestinal rehabilitation, such as using intestinal stem cells and managing short bowel syndrome
• Liver and oncology, including the molecular mechanisms of liver cancer
• Transplant, including liver tumors that lead to the need for a transplant
• Trauma, such as injury patterns and risk, injury prevention, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) screening, and partnering with communities to reduce childhood trauma

We align our basic science and clinical research with opportunities to share and develop ideas throughout Cincinnati Children’s.
