Pediatric Hospital Medicine becomes the ABP’s newest sub-specialty
In November 2019, pediatric hospital medicine (PHM) became an official sub-specialty of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) with the administration of the first certification exam. Twenty-three of our hospitalists were among the first physicians certified in the nation. Several members of our division are an part integral of the advancement of the field toward sub-specialty status. Jeffrey Simmons, MD, MSc, served as a member of the Joint Council of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, which helped develop the scholarly vision for PHM board certification.
Jennifer O’Toole, MD, MEd, served as a member of the American Board of Pediatrics PHM sub-board that conducted a practice analysis of the specialty, set qualifications for certification and developed brand new content for the exam.
Matthew Kelleher, MD, MEd, assisted in question development for the exam.
Yemisi Jones, MD, and
Lisa Herrmann, MD, MEd, developed a popular board review course here at Cincinnati Children's to prepare hospitalists across the country for the exam.
Benjamin Kinnear, MD, MEd, curated an accompanying question bank along with Shivani Patel, DO, and
Laura Piper, MD, who also served as the visual diagnosis editor. Amy Long Rule, MD, MPH, managed the newborn content for the course. The course attracted over 250 participants both in person and online from 40 states and the District of Columbia. Achieving official training and certification status pays tribute to the critical role hospitalists play in clinical care, systems improvement, research and education in the inpatient environment.
