From the Director
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to present our 2017 Research Annual Report, which reflects another year of outstanding scientific achievement by our faculty and the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation.
Our research spans the spectrum of discovery from basic exploration of biological processes, to translation of new knowledge to clinical practice, to improving population health in our local community and around the world. I am particularly excited by three current investment areas:
- Accelerating the integration of genomic information into clinical care through our Center for Pediatric Genomics and its relationship with the Division of Human Genetics.
- Addressing the linkages between neurological diseases, mental health, and population wellness through our “Mind, Brain and Behavior” initiative.
- Launching our new Center for Stem Cell and Organoid Medicine (CuSTOM) to advance the potential for organoid technology to change the trajectory of drug research and clinical care.
In this publication, we highlight nine of our top research achievements from FY17. A committee of research leaders had a very difficult task in selecting these high-profile publications from outstanding nominations by more than 50 divisions. In addition, more of our work is appearing in high-impact journals, including three papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine and three others in Nature.
We are proud to report that it has been a record year for extramural grant funding at Cincinnati Children’s. This year we received $218.9 million in grants and contracts, a 5.7 percent increase from FY16 and a record total despite a tough funding environment.
This growth has been possible in part because our faculty remains dedicated to team science within our walls and to developing partnerships with colleagues worldwide. Meanwhile, the Research Foundation continues to grow and to invest in faculty development through internally funded pilot programs, mentorship, and superb research cores.
These investments reflect our commitment to a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary culture that we believe will continue to produce life-changing innovations to benefit children and their families for years to come.
