Nationally Ranked Medical Center
Cincinnati Children’s is consistently ranked in the top tier of children’s hospitals in the country. Our fellows have the unique experience of training at a hospital that serves both the local community and a broader national and international population of patients.
Multidisciplinary Pediatric Expertise and Experience
As a division, Pediatric Pathology utilizes a “Centers of Excellence” model, bringing together specialists focused on a wide range of areas and organ systems—from oncopathology and neuropathology to molecular and digital pathology. This approach allows fellows to gain experience in various subspecialties under the guidance of our expert faculty.
Unmatched Complexity and Volume of Case Exposure
As a nationally-ranked medical center, our pathologists work on the most complex pediatric, perinatal and fetal pathology cases—and so do our fellows. Our fellowship offers extensive, high-level experience in the full range of pediatric and clinical pathology.
The diversity and complexity of our cases is unmatched in volume. Annually, we see over 15,000 surgical pathology specimens, 140 perinatal and pediatric autopsy cases, 1,500 cytology cases and 1,000 outside pediatric surgical pathology consultation cases. We are one of the largest pediatric autopsy pathology services in the country.
State-of-the-Art Technology and World-Class Laboratories
Our fellows are trained in diagnostic modalities and laboratory testing techniques using the most advanced resources oriented to children’s needs. We have a fully operational histology lab for processing all routine biopsy specimens with a full range of highly specialized histologic technology—ranging from special histochemical stains and immunohistochemical stains to molecular technology and electron microscopy. We also have an immunology lab and clinical mass spectrometry lab for highly focused work.
All clinical and research labs operate under Good Lab Practice (GLP) standards and are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Dedicated Mentorship and Structured Support
In addition to the superior volume and complexity of cases experienced by our pediatric pathology fellows, what sets our fellowship apart is the unmatched level of mentorship we provide. Our program is trainee-centered and designed to meet each trainee’s individual goals.
Through our structured curriculum and didactic programming, fellows and faculty engage in bi-weekly formal didactics, including lectures and slide seminars on high-yield topics, bi-weekly pediatric surgical pathology “unknown” conferences, regular journal club sessions and periodic talks on topics of interest.
Innovative Research Opportunities
Fellows seeking to deepen their expertise in pediatric pathology can opt for a unique second year of training through our nonstandard fellowship program. This advanced year is specifically tailored for individuals focusing on pediatric and perinatal pathology and includes the balanced experience of 50% clinical practice and 50% research activity. The program offers guidance, mentorship, funding, infrastructure and support for meetings. Fellows benefit from the unparalleled resources of Cincinnati Children’s as a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded institution and the largest pediatric research facility in the United States, encompassing 1.4 million square feet of cutting-edge research space.
