Phlebotomy Technicians
The Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) is responsible for collection of blood samples via venipuncture and capillary methods on patients of all ages and may also collect body fluid / other non-blood samples from patients. As a PBT, you may also perform laboratory sample processing and analysis of waived testing in the clinical laboratory. The PBT must be knowledgeable regarding specimen collection procedures and must be able to collect samples in a safe and efficient manner. You will have the opportunity to work alongside the rest of the healthcare team - doctors, nurses, and other laboratory staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 2 years of phlebotomy or other relevant clinical lab specimen collection OR Completion of a phlebotomy or medical assistant program

Lab Support Technicians
The Lab Support Technician (LST) plays an integral role in the clinical laboratory. The LST is responsible for specimen processing, which includes sample intake and reviewing to ensure that the samples are collected appropriately, while meeting the quality standards required for testing. You will also be responsible for centrifugation and separation of laboratory samples for analysis. The LST must be knowledgeable regarding testing and stability requirements for laboratory specimens. The LST may also operate laboratory testing instruments, perform quality control, sample analysis and report outpatient results.

Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Specialists
Both the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Specialist (MLS) are responsible for sample analysis for the diagnosis and treatment of patients via various testing methodologies. The MLT / MLS may work in one specific area of the clinical laboratory or may be generalists, rotating through multiple laboratory departments. The MLT / MLS is also responsible for performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instrumentation, running quality controls and calibrations, as well as proficiency testing samples. They may also assist with specimen collection and processing duties where applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in medical laboratory science OR associate degree with 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university
- 60 semester hours that comprise of 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
Minimum Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree or higher degree in a chemical, physical, biological or medical laboratory science from a regionally accredited college/university

Laboratory Sciences Education Program
The clinical laboratory opened the Cincinnati Children's Laboratory Sciences Education Program in the Fall of 2022. Educational programs offered include certificates in Phlebotomy (PBT), Medical Laboratory Assisting (MLA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
Currently, these education programs are only available to current Cincinnati Children's employees interested in joining the clinical laboratory team in one of the roles listed above. For more information on one of these programs, please contact ClinicalLabEducation@cchmc.org.
