Types of MRKH
Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome —also known as Müllerian agenesis or vaginal agenesis—is a diagnosis that affects the female reproductive system. People with MRKH have an underdeveloped uterus (womb), cervix and upper vagina.
MRKH syndrome can be grouped into two types:
- MRKH Type 1: underdevelopment of the uterus, cervix and upper vagina.
- MRKH Type 2: underdevelopment of the uterus, cervix and upper vagina, along with other changes in the development of different body structures or organs (such as the kidneys, spine, ears or heart). For example, an individual may have the underdevelopment or absence of one kidney, or a kidney in an atypical location such as the pelvis. Individuals may also have spine conditions, such as scoliosis.
