Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Program
What to Expect: Inpatient Care

What to Expect with Inpatient Care from the CDH Program

If your child is born with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), they will stay in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until they are strong enough to go home with you.

CDH Program Inpatient Service

You are a critical part of your child’s care team, especially in the weeks immediately after birth.

  • You will be involved in all aspects of your baby’s treatment.
  • You will meet daily with our world-renowned CDH experts to plan and manage your child’s CDH care.

At Cincinnati Children’s, we believe care consistency leads to the best outcomes. You will see the same doctors, nurses, and specialists during your baby’s stay in the NICU. Everyone on your child’s care team is uniquely specialized in managing CDH patients.

Your baby’s care team includes many experts who specialize in:

  • Nutrition
  • Occupational therapy
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical therapy
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Social work
  • Speech therapy (to help with feeding)

A case manager works with your family to coordinate your child’s care at the hospital and to help you get ready to return home.

When You Are Discharged from the CDH Program Inpatient Service

Your case manager helps you plan for discharge and prepare to care for your baby at home. We arrange for follow-up care, such as remote patient monitoring.

We also connect you with additional services, such as our NICU Follow-Up Clinic and our Outpatient CDH Program.
