Angeles-Han Research Lab
Pediatric uveitis is an inflammatory eye disease that can lead to sight-threatening complications in 50% of children. It commonly occurs with autoimmune conditions such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, but can also occur in isolation (idiopathic uveitis). Early detection of uveitis is important for timely treatment and prevention of permanent vision loss.
Our overall mission is to improve the vision outcomes of children with inflammatory eye disease and understand the impact of uveitis on vision health, both within the U.S. and globally. Dr. Angeles-Han’s research focuses on identifying genetic and biologic risk factors of uveitis development in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, discovering biomarkers of diagnosis and disease activity using ocular fluid, developing and validating the only measure of vision-related quality of life and functioning for pediatric uveitis, the “Effects of Youngsters’ Eyesight on Quality of Life” (EYE-Q©), optimizing systemic treatment to prevent blindness, and establishing standardized means of assessing uveitis outcomes.
