A Hub for Researchers Interested in Global Health

The Global Health Center at Cincinnati Children’s serves as a core facility for faculty, fellows, and residents interested in changing health outcomes for children around the world. We help foster collaboration and promote opportunities related to high-quality global health research, training, and education.

International Research

Each year, we offer competitive awards that fund global health research projects for investigators at all career levels. Awards include:

  • For pediatric residents: Global Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW) Award
  • For pediatric fellows: Strauss Fellow Award
  • For junior faculty: Faculty International Research Excellence (FIRE) Award
  • For established and senior faculty: ICE Award

From these awards, researchers receive funding to complete research internationally. Here are some examples of recent research projects:

  • Cardiology in Uganda: Identifying the essential elements of case managers and peer support groups for prophylaxis adherence in rheumatic heart disease
  • Developmental pediatrics in Peru: Parental self-efficacy, parental investment, and early child development in an urban setting
  • Endocrinology in Ghana: Patient-reported outcomes in patients with Type I diabetes transferring from pediatric to adult receivership in sub-Saharan Africa (PRO Africa)
  • Hematology in Kenya: Sickle Cell Health and Reaching Equity—A Partnership for Quality Improvement (SHARE-QI)
  • Neurology in Zambia: Impact of kangaroo mother care on postpartum depression and infant development in Zambia coupled with quality improvement in developmental screenings
  • Pathology in Guinea: Erythrocyte alloimmunization and transfusion practices in Guinea, West Africa

Education and Training

Along with research, the Global Health Center prioritizes education and training. Each year, we accept about eight residents from pediatric categorical or combined residency programs into a specialized Global Health Pathway. Participation in the Global Health Pathway includes a longitudinal curriculum with monthly meetings, a two-week dedicated global health advocacy block, and opportunities to engage in global health through subsidized international rotations at partner sites and mentored academic activities.

We also support global health fellowships in multiple divisions, which has grown the faculty base for the Global Health Center.

Numerous faculty collaborate in global partnerships to support the education and training of physicians and researchers at international sites with a goal of capacity-building for pediatric care globally.
