Zimmermann Lab

The Zimmermann Research Lab features a specialty in pathology and allergy / immunology with three main areas of research: eosinophilic diseases, mast cell–mediated disease, and cancer immunology.

Eosinophilic Diseases

We investigate eosinophilic diseases, which include allergic diseases such as asthma, parasitic infestation, eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases and rare eosinophilic leukemias. Eosinophils can be present in some tissues with no ill effects; however, at other times or in other tissues, eosinophils can cause serious damage. Our goal is to learn the mechanisms that cause this damage.

Mast Cell–Mediated Disease

Our mast cell–mediated disease studies are translational and focus on analyzing pathology samples from patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms and / or dysautonomia (e.g., fainting, headaches, “brain fog”).

Cancer Immunology

These studies are clinical and involve a large team of investigators including basic scientists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists.
