Hospital Medicine
Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, who is a professor in the UC Department of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Hospital Medicine, received the research award from the Academic Pediatric Association. This award recognizes his extraordinary accomplishments in improving child health through scholarship in identifying and implementing best clinical practices. His key areas of work focus on understanding and reducing variation in care of common serious conditions, such as pneumonia, to improve outcomes. Shah remains editor-in-chief of the Journal Hospital Medicine, the official journal of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and its 19,000 pediatric and adult hospitalist members.
Benjamin Kinnear, MD, MEd, received the Cincinnati Children's Educational Achievement Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to medical education in terms of scholarship, mentorship, and clinical teaching. He received both the Cincinnati Children's Faculty Teacher of the Year Award, given to one faculty member by the graduating residents of the pediatrics residency program, and the UC Richard W. Vilter Award, given to one faculty member by the graduating internal medicine residency class who "exemplifies the physician as teacher". The International Competency-based Medical Education Collaborators group, an international group of leading experts in the world of competency-based medical education elected Kinnear to the group. He was one of the first faculty members to complete the Education Research Scholars Program, a grant-funded year dedicated to medical education research training as part of the Pediatric Education Research Unit at Cincinnati Children's. Kinnear received the prestigious Josiah H. Macy Faculty Scholars Award to pursue innovation in medical education by piloting competency-based time-variable training in a local residency program and was also awarded an AMA Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation grant to investigate the use of clinical care measures in residency assessment. The School for Health Professions Education at Maastricht University accepted Kinnear into the PhD program in 2021.
Joanna Thomson, MD, MPH, received the Cincinnati Children's Faculty Mentoring Award in recognition of her outstanding mentorship for fellows, residents, and medical students.
Matt Kelleher, MD, Med, received the “Golden Apple Teaching Award,” given to one faculty member across the college of medicine by the graduating class of medical students. He also received the “Excellence in Mentoring” award given each spring to two outstanding faculty members for their contribution to student’s career and growth. The college of medicine Education Policy Committee (EPC) elected Kelleher for a three-year appointment. Selected this upcoming academic year, Kelleher is one of two scholars for the Education Research Scholars Program, a grant-funded year dedicated to medical education research training as part of the Pediatric Education Research Unit at Cincinnati Children's. Lastly, Kelleher is as a “Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Hidden Gem” awardee in July 2020 for exceptional contributions to Cincinnati Children’s and the broader community.
Michelle Mitchell, APRN, 2021 recipient of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Preceptor award through Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The intention of this award is to recognize the APP preceptors throughout the organization. Of 15 nominees, Mitchell received this selection as the preceptor of the year for 2021 through her dedication to educating and mentoring APP students.
Sonya Tang Girdwood, MD, PhD, received the K12 Child Health Research Career Development Award to study the relationship between piperacillin concentrations and development of piperacillin/tazobactam-associated acute kidney injury. She received an appointment to be a member of the American Society Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (ASCPT) Career Development Committee and the Scientific Programming Committee, which selects the content for the national ASCPT annual meeting.
Danielle Weber, MD, Med, received one of the initial University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) Gratitude Awards as part of a new award series started in October 2020. She received this for advocacy for residents and students related to PPE and improvement work in hospital processes such as bedflow. Weber served as one of the physician leads in the UC Health PPE Taskforce and in May 2021 the PPE Taskforce received the UC Health Quality & Safety Award given in Recognition of Dedication to Providing Safety Through the Health System in 2020. UCCOM Clinical Skills Course for M1 and M2 students appointed Weber as co-director. After her first year teaching in this role, the M1 class chose her to receive the UCCOM M1 Silver Apple Teaching Award in recognition of excellent teaching.
Matthew Molloy, MD, MPH, will be working to improve the timely transition to enteral antibiotics as part of his acceptance into the Cincinnati Children's Anderson Center's Quality Scholars Program. Additionally, the Journal of Hospital Medicine recently selected Molloy to be an editorial fellow.
Lisa E. Herrmann, MD, Med, accepted and completed the Educational Research Scholars Program, a grant-funded research fellowship at Cincinnati Children's.
