Pediatric Surgery Training Program
The Division of General and Thoracic Surgery provides educational and training opportunities for medical students.
Third Year
Two three-week clinical rotations are required for the third-year surgery clerkship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Rotation in the Division of Pediatric Surgery fulfills one of these surgery clerkship requirements.
Students electing a pediatric surgery rotation during their third year are generally interested in pursuing medical disciplines in which children are treated, such as:
- Pediatrics
- Family practice
- Primary care
- Emergency medicine
- Medicine / pediatrics
- General surgery
- Pediatric surgery
During rotation in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery, students function as an integral part of the professional team. They make pre-rounds on assigned patients, as well as morning and afternoon rounds with the pediatric surgery team. They also:
- Attend clinics
- Observe patient evaluations in the Emergency Department
- Observe pediatric surgical procedures
- Attend all academic functions in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery
Fourth Year
Students who are interested in a more in-depth exposure to pediatric surgery may complete a four-week rotation in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery. During this time, they not only participate in the clinical activities afforded to third-year medical students, but also gain more experience in both the emergency department and the operating room. In addition, they are given more responsibility.
Visiting Student Program
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education has adopted the following standards effective June 13, 1998, with regard to visiting students.
Students visiting from other schools for electives must possess qualifications equivalent to the students they will join in these experiences. There must be sufficient institutional resources to accommodate such students without significantly diminishing the resources available to students already enrolled. Visiting students must be registered by the school for the period in which they are visiting so as to ensure that they satisfy the school’s requirements for health records, immunizations, health insurance and liability protection.
