Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric Surgery Residency Program

The Pediatric Surgery Division’s residency program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is approved by the Residency Review Committee of the American College of Graduate Medical Education.

The two-year training program accepts one new trainee each year. Learn more here. In addition, residents in general surgery rotate to the Cincinnati Children’s Pediatric Surgery Division from the University of Cincinnati; Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati; and Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati.

In addition, medical student education is a significant commitment of the education program. Students in their core course surgical program may rotate onto pediatric surgery, and others electing pediatric surgery as a senior elective also spend time on the surgical service.

Residents in General Surgery

Residents in general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital and Jewish Hospital fulfill their pediatric surgery experience through a rotation in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery during the third or fourth year of their general surgery program.

Rotations vary from one to three months, depending upon the agreement between Cincinnati Children’s and each of the three participating institutions. During this rotation, residents are exposed to a complete array of routine and complex surgical procedures, including:

  • Trauma
  • Surgical oncology
  • Solid organ transplantation
  • Neonatal and pediatric critical care

Operative experience is commensurate with the level of training.

Residents in Pediatrics

Residents in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s are offered a one-month rotation in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery during the second year of their program.

During this rotation, they participate in the pre- and postoperative medical care of pediatric surgery patients. They are also exposed to emergency room evaluations and may observe and participate in a wide range of surgical procedures, including:

  • Trauma
  • Surgical oncology
  • Solid organ transplantation
  • Neonatal and pediatric critical care
