Curriculum
The Cincinnati Children’s Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) has prepared a series of core educational activities for fellows throughout the hospital. The program covers topics including biostatistics, leadership transitions and research planning. Fellows across all specialties have the opportunity to present their research to their peers and mentors at the Fellows' Academy Research in Progress Series.
In addition to this training, the Division of Human Genetics (DHG) offers a variety of conferences and lectures to enhance residents’ training. We hold a weekly clinical case conference to discuss patients and families seen during the preceding week and to assign patients to trainees for the upcoming week. This conference is also used as an educational forum to discuss breakthroughs in treatment and management, review complex issues related to patient care and genetic counseling, and to discuss ethical issues.
We also hold a weekly laboratory case conference that includes all laboratory staff and trainees, as well as invited guests such as medical genetics residents. Presenters are chosen on a rotating basis from all areas of the laboratory, allowing interesting results and concepts to be discussed across a range of topics.
Most of our other conferences are more formal. The DHG Journal Club is held twice each month, and trainee attendance is mandatory. Residents and fellows present in journal club at least once each year. A biweekly lecture series, Emerging Topics in Clinical Genomics, is held in conjunction with the Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. Lectures are mostly clinical in nature, but may also cover ethical issues, counseling issues, basic science, and issues related to systems-based medicine and family support. Presentations are usually given by invited faculty and speakers from Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati. There is a weekly education series for residents and fellows that covers topics in genetics, board preparation questions and interesting cases. There is an educational conference held in conjunction with staff from the Newborn Intensive Care Unit to discuss interesting clinical cases.
The DHG also holds meetings focused on research. For example, there is a monthly DHG seminar available for Cincinnati Children's Hospital researchers and clinicians to present research projects. There are also twice-monthly research check-ins. In these meetings, we discuss new and ongoing research projects. Fellows may present their proposed major research projects at this conference. Every month, the division also hosts the Genomic Discovery and Translation Seminar Series, often with outside speakers.
