Healthy Participant Study for Teens and Young Adults 14 to 21 Years Old

Why are we doing this research?

University of Cincinnati is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to see how changes to brain activity in teens and young adults with a bipolar family history compare to others with no family history of bipolar disorder and no mood or psychotic disorders.

Who can participate?

Teens and young adults 14 to 21 years of age without any family history of bipolar disorder and no mood or psychotic disorders may be eligible to participate.

What will happen in the study?

This study will last 60 months depending on when you enter the study. Here are some of the things that will happen in this study:

Participants will:

  • Attend a screening visit
  • Complete tests of memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities
    to have participants IQ measured
  • Submit blood samples
  • Have an MRI scan

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

If you and your child agree to take part in this research study, there may not be a direct medical benefit to your child. We hope the information learned from this research study will benefit other patients and families with a family history of bipolar disorder.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

We will discuss possible risks or discomforts with those interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants will receive up to $500 per year in this study. All study visits, tests, and procedures will be provided at no cost to participants.
