Autism Daily Living Skills Study for High School Juniors and Seniors

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children's is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to learn more about the daily living skills (e.g., laundry, hygiene, cooking, money management) of autistic teens. Teens and their caregiver may be randomized to participate in a weekly intervention to build age-appropriate daily living skills.

Who can participate?

Teens in their last 2 years of high school who:

  • Have a diagnosis of autism
  • Are enrolled in 11th or 12th grade
  • Have an IQ>70

The teen’s caregiver will also participate.

Conditions

  • Autism
  • Developmental Delays

What will happen in the study?

This study includes 1 visit to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital lasting approximately 1-2 hours. There will also be 3 telehealth outcome visits and weekly telehealth intervention sessions. These are the things that your teen will complete while in the study:

Your teen will:

  • Complete assessments
  • Answer questionnaires
  • Attend virtual intervention sessions
  • Complete a phone diary at 3 time points

You, as the parent or guardian will:

  • Complete interviews with staff
  • Answer questionnaires about your teen
  • Attend virtual intervention sessions

You and your teen will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains the details of the study. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that your questions are answered.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

Your teen may not have a direct benefit from participating in this study. However, we hope to learn information from the study that may help us create more effective ways to prepare teens entering adulthood in the future.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

It is not expected that you or your teen will be exposed to any risk by participating in this research study.

A detailed list of possible side effects will be provided to those participants, parents or guardians interested in knowing more about this study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants will receive up to $440 for time and effort.
