Robert Wood, PhD, MD, director, Pulmonary Bronchoscopy, at Cincinnati Children’s, received the American Thoracic Society’s Founder’s Award at the 2018 International Conference in San Diego recently. The award is presented to members in recognition of their role in founding the disciplines of pediatric respiratory diseases, including pulmonary, critical care, and neonatal medicine programs, and a lifetime of achievement in pediatric respiratory medicine.
Wood earned his PhD in medical physiology and his MD from Vanderbilt University. He completed his pediatric residency at Duke University Medical Center in 1972, then went on to do two fellowships: one in pediatric metabolism (National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases) and pediatric pulmonology (Case Western Reserve University/Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital).
Wood has played a major role in the development of instrumentation and techniques for flexible bronchoscopy in pediatric patients. He is recognized as a teacher of endoscopic techniques and has published many papers and book chapters on the subject. Additionally, he has extensive experience with clinical problems in pediatric pulmonary medicine, especially children with complex airway problems and cystic fibrosis.
