In memoriam
Javier El-Bietar, MD, assistant professor, Bone Marrow Transplantation, died suddenly on December 19, 2017, at the age of 42. El-Bietar joined the faculty at Cincinnati Children’s in 2013. Prior to that, he earned his MD at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.
During his residency training in general pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, he received an Excellence in Research Award. He continued training in pediatric hematology/oncology at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital. Then he spent an additional clinical training year with Texas Children's Hospital and the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy following the bone marrow transplant fellowship curriculum.
El-Bietar distinguished himself as an esteemed and compassionate physician and clinical investigator at Cincinnati Children’s. He was also a devoted family man.
Javi is survived by his wife, Nicole Gandolfo; children, Sophie, Miles and Livia; parents, Hassan and Marina El-Bietar; and his sisters, Suria El-Bietar, Jasmina El-Bietar and Laila Allen.
Joel Singerman, MD, age 66, passed away on December 28, 2017. Singerman was a much-loved community pediatrician with Springdale-Mason Pediatrics, a graduate of the UC College of Medicine and a member of Cincinnati Children’s residency class of ’84. The parent of one of his patients remembered him as a “rare combination of humor, humility, warmth and intellect that was a comfort and support.” Never rushed, he delighted his patients and always took time to answer every question.
Singerman is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Joshua, Aaron, Karen and Sarah; his mother, Gloria; brothers Howard and Fred, and five grandchildren.
