Cincinnati Children’s has again been named one of America’s Best Employers for Women by Forbes, and once more ranks among the Top 10 health systems in the nation.
Of the 600 companies recognized by Forbes for 2024, Cincinnati Children’s ranked No. 27 among Best Employers for Women. Cincinnati Children’s has made the list every year since Forbes began the recognition in 2018.
Women constitute nearly 80% of the more than 19,500 employees at Cincinnati Children’s, which is the region’s largest employer.
Over half of the physicians at Cincinnati Children’s are women – including the system’s chief operating officer, Evaline Alessandrini, MD, as well as Tina Cheng, MD, MPH, who is chief medical officer, chair of Pediatrics and director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation.
“The women who build careers at Cincinnati Children’s help lead the way in transforming healthcare,” Alessandrini said. “We are the nation’s No. 1 ranked pediatric health system, and we value every woman who works here because they have their fingers on the pulse of our organization. We welcome those who think strategically, which at times may involve an unconventional approach to making the changes necessary to bring the greatest benefit to our patients, families and team members.
“The women at Cincinnati Children’s are passionate about working together to provide the best outcomes for local kids – as well as for the families who travel here from all 50 states and dozens of countries to receive care,” Alessandrini said.
“Our commitment to the women who helped us rise to be the most highly regarded pediatric health system includes mentorship and educational opportunities to ensure their long-term success at Cincinnati Children’s,” Alessandrini added. “Our focus is on providing world-class care to patients and families, and the best way to do that is through a collaborative and inclusive work environment.”
Over half of executive and senior managers at Cincinnati Children’s are women, along with 73% of first or mid-level managers. In addition, half of the members of the Board of Trustees are women – including chair Liza Smitherman.
Cincinnati Children’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion strengthens not only the care provided to patients and families but also the organization’s research and educational missions, Cheng said. Nearly one-third of the organization’s employees are engaged in research.
“We believe in continuous learning, and we invest in our team members by providing the training and resources needed so they can fully contribute to our missions,” Cheng said.
Forbes and market research firm Statista compiled the latest ranking of America’s Best Employers for Women based on a survey of more than 150,000 women – across all industries – who work for companies with at least 1,000 employees.
Participants rated companies on things such as working conditions, salary/wage, and diversity. In addition, women were asked to rate their employer regarding parental leave, family support, flexibility, and pay equity. Women also could evaluate other employers in their industries. Factored in was the share of women among an organization’s top executives and board members.
Cincinnati Children’s ranks No. 1 in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 listing of Best Children’s Hospitals. Fortune has recognized Cincinnati Children’s as one of America’s Most Innovative Companies. Established in 1883, Cincinnati Children’s is internationally recognized for improving child health and transforming delivery of care through research, education, and innovation.
