What is Osteomyelitis?
Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone. It often occurs in long bones, such as the femur (thigh bone) and humerus (upper arm bone). It can also develop in the sacrum (base of the spine) or any other bone.
Anyone can get osteomyelitis, but it happens most often in children under 5 years old, premature babies and babies who suffered trauma during delivery. It is more likely to affect boys than girls.
Osteomyelitis is more common among children than adults because they have open growth plates, which are areas of new bone growth near the end of the bone. Bacteria can get into the open growth plates and cause osteomyelitis.
How Common is Osteomyelitis?
Osteomyelitis affects about 2 to 5 out of 10,000 people.
