Oscillating PEP

What is an Oscillating PEP Device?

Oscillating PEP devices are small hand-held devices that help move mucus out of the lungs. Keeping mucus out of your child's lungs will:

  • Improve their health
  • Help prevent them from getting sick

Using oscillating PEP correctly is very important. It should be used with Huff Coughs during treatment.

How an Oscillating PEP Works

Vibrations help to loosen and dislodge mucus. Positive expiratory pressure, or PEP, helps air to get around and behind trapped mucus. PEP also helps to “splint” the airways open. This allows the airflow to move the mucus up to the large airways where it can be huffed or coughed out.

Instructions to Use an Oscillating PEP

  1. Have your child sit up straight with their elbows resting on a table.
  2. Have your child take slightly deeper breaths than normal for one to two minutes.
  3. Have them take a large, steady breath (just slightly more than a normal breath) through the mouthpiece attached to PEP device.
  4. Have your child hold their breath for two to three seconds.
  5. Have your child breathe out through the mouthpiece into the PEP device for four to six seconds or until just beyond a normal breath. Repeat 15 times (one cycle).
  6. At end of a cycle, remove the mask and perform two or three huff coughs.
  7. Follow this with one (or more) regular coughs to clear the mucus from the large airways.
  8. Have your child rest for 30 seconds while they do the controlled breathing technique.
  9. Repeat the entire process for six cycles or a maximum of 30 minutes.

Repeat the entire process for six cycles or a maximum of 30 minutes.

Cleaning an Oscillating PEP

After each treatment

  • Open the oscillating PEP device.
  • Allow the oscillating PEP device to air dry on a clean paper towel.

After the last treatment of the day:

  • Clean per manufacturer instructions to sterilize the device.
  • Inspect your oscillating PEP to ensure proper function before next use.
