What is MOGAD?
Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease (MOGAD) is a type of autoimmune disease. The body’s immune system protects it from foreign objects. With an autoimmune disorder, the body doesn’t recognize its own healthy tissue and attacks it. MOGAD affects the brain, spinal cord and optic (eye) nerve. It attacks the protective cover, called the myelin sheath, around neurons (nerve cells). This damage prevents the nerves from sending signals to the body to move, sense or function.
MOGAD is not present at birth. It develops as the immune system matures. It often presents in childhood, with around half of the cases occurring in children.
