Frenotomy

What is a Frenotomy?

A frenotomy is a procedure to clip the thin piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth or gum. A frenotomy can be used to treat infants and children who are tongue-tied (ankyloglossia).

Who Performs a Frenotomy?

The specialists of the Cincinnati Children’s Department of Otolaryngology / Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) perform frenotomies. Families who wish to have their infant or older child evaluated for a tongue-tie should call 513-636-4355 for an appointment.

Breastfeeding Evaluation Before or After a Frenotomy

Mothers who would like to be seen with their infants for a breastfeeding evaluation before or after a frenotomy should call the Center for Breastfeeding Medicine at 513-636-2326 for an appointment.

The Center for Breastfeeding Medicine physicians follow the guidelines outlined in the Academy for Breastfeeding Medicine’s position statement.
