I care for children and young adults with blood diseases and lead the multidisciplinary sickle cell team in the Cincinnati Children’s Health Equity Network. The network’s mission is to improve equitable care for patients with sickle cell disease.
I earned my medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Then, I did a pediatrics residency in the Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center combined program. I was in the urban health and advocacy track and the Global Health Academy. I completed my hematology/oncology fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s.
Cincinnati Children’s drew me in with their commitment to optimizing the standard of care treatment for sickle cell disease, preventing pain and organ damage, developing gene therapy and improving outcomes globally. I love the energy of the hematology division—it inspires my intellectual curiosity and commitment to excellence in patient care.
My research focuses on developing evidence-based strategies for diagnosing and treating children with sickle cell disease and addressing barriers to implementing quality care. I’m leading a trial in Uganda to determine the change in blood transfusion utilization among children with sickle cell disease with the initiation of hydroxyurea and to assess the feasibility of pharmacokinetic dosing of hydroxyurea there.
