Peggy Hostetter honored by YWCA
Peggy Hostetter, MD, director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation and chair of Pediatrics, was named one of eight YWCA Career Women of Achievement, an annual award recognizing women for their outstanding leadership, vision, exceptional community contributions and renowned professional success.
Hostetter is responsible for the professional activities of a large portion of Cincinnati Children’s 15,000 employees, including the clinical and research faculty in the Department of Pediatrics and those pediatric residents and fellows who deliver care to patients. She has supervisory responsibility for the directors of 42 academic divisions within the Department of Pediatrics, as well as for the leaders of specially funded programs. Her career achievements make her one of the nation’s most distinguished physicians, researchers and leaders in pediatric healthcare. Hostetter was first in her class, both in college and medical school. She came to Cincinnati from Yale where she was chief of Immunology and director of the Yale Child Research Center, followed by an appointment as the first female chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief of the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
Hostetter holds six patents for inventions related to infectious diseases, including an antibody that prevents life-threatening infections in patients using central venous catheters.
In 1993, she was elected the first female president of the Society for Pediatric Research since 1963. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) in 2001.
Supporters at Cincinnati Children’s and previous employers have praised her as “brilliant, tireless, engaging, inspiring, a fabulous mentor, approachable, humble, informed and visionary.”
Hostetter has been a member of the Cincinnati Children’s Board of Trustees since 2014, and she served as the president of the American Pediatric Society from 2015 to 2016. She also received the 2014 Founder’s Award from the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research and the 2010 Mentor of the Year Award from the Eastern Society for Pediatric Research.
She and her fellow Career Women of Achievement will be honored at the 38th annual luncheon at the Duke Energy Convention Center on May 10.
